Kauri Pod was created to respond to the growing need for safe, dignified sleeping solutions for people experiencing homelessness and rough sleeping across Aotearoa New Zealand. Inspired by the strength and protection of the Kauri tree, the concept reflects resilience, shelter, and care for people and community.
The Kauri Pod Tent Backpack extends this kaupapa into a portable, fast-deploy form. Designed to carry like a backpack and pitch in minutes, it provides an immediate, dignified shelter option for emergency and crisis situations — including scenarios where homelessness escalates beyond the capacity of fixed accommodation, such as natural disasters, sudden housing shortages, or civil emergencies. Its solar-powered lighting and USB charging keep users connected to support services even when off-grid.
Kauri Pod is a harm-reduction initiative that offers stability and dignity while supporting pathways toward longer-term solutions, whether through our fixed sleeping pods or this portable emergency shelter format.
Guided by Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles and inclusive of all New Zealanders, Kauri Pod aims to reduce harm, improve wellbeing, and deliver positive community benefits through practical, compassionate design.
Compact backpack transport — 900mm × 420mm × 320mm. Light enough to take anywhere.
7001-T6 aluminium poles tension the shell into a structured sleeping capsule.
Multi-point anchoring stabilises the capsule in outdoor conditions for a secure night's rest.
